Dances on Cosău River Valley Folk Festival

Description:

On the third day of Easter, in a village in Maramureș which has preserved its wooden houses, craftsmen and traditional installations, tourists can take part in the holiday dance tradition. The traditional dress parade, which fills the main road of Budești village and the performances take place in the wooden barn in the centre of Sârbi village.
Folk ensembles from Maramureș (Budești – Sârbi, Călinești, Vadu Izei, Ieud, Vișeu de Sus, Șomcuța Mare, etc.), Bihor and Cluj counties  perform in this festival.

 

Village Warrior Camp 2020

Description:

The “Village Warrior” mountain bike camp is dedicated to outdoor, two-wheel adventure enthusiasts. The event is held in Breb village, which is part of the Eco Maramureș ecotourism destination. Skilled and amateur bikers are both welcome to explore the rural life, as well as the Gutâi Mountain area, which is riddled with spectacular natural attractions. In this traditional landscape, they will discover a network of forestry roads, paths and trails which, centuries ago, were used by one of the local heroes, Pintea Viteazul (Pintea the Brave), and his haiduks (outlaws).

 

Tânjaua Hotenarilor, LII – edition

Description:

Tânjaua Hotenarilor is considered to be the Eco Maramureș farmers’ celebration. It is an ancient agricultural custom, attested as early as 1870, celebrating the first farmer who begins ploughing his land. He is accompanied by the villagers, dressed in their traditional holiday costume, forming a suite, accompanied by young boys wearing 12 “tânjele” (beams) adorned with birch branches, ribbons and towels. The suite then makes its way towards Valea Dărasca, where the farmer’s face is sprinkled with water, while invocations for abundant crops and a rich year are uttered. For over 40 years, the Tânjaua Hotenarilor continues with a traditional local song and dance show,  being a wonderful opportunity to get acquainted with the spirit of the place.

Description:

On Pentecost, children’s folk groups from all over the Maramureș area attend the „Nu vă uitaţi că-s micuţ” festival, held on Valea Cosăului, in Budești commune, where they will outdo each other in performing traditional dances and songs. This festival is organized in an attempt to cultivate in children’s hearts the love for customs and traditional dress, being one of the most representative of its kind on Cosău Valley.

On the same occasion, a traditional craftsmen’s fair shall also take place. The attendants will have the opportunity to be introduced to and to purchase local products.

 

Învârtita Vălenarilor

Description:

Învârtita Vălenarilor is a folk festival which gathers dance ensembles and folk singers, and is organized on the stage in the centre of Călinești commune. The villagers wear their traditional holiday dress and, after they leave church, they meet in the village centre, to properly welcome the guests invited to this event, and to dance the “Învârtita” dance as can only be seen in Călinești. Then, the villagers put out tables with traditional products in their yards.

 

The Goulash Festival

Description:

On the first Sunday in September, you are invited to the most palatable festival of Eco Maramureș.

The Goulash Festival takes place in Ocna Șugatag, where amateur and professional chefs outdo each other in preparing the most savoury goulash. The winner is chosen after having tasted the meals, and the food must, most certainly, be “washed down” with horinka. The word “goulash” means “cowherd” in Hungarian. In the old days, it was called “goulash meat”, meaning beef cooked by the cowherd. The first recipe which has been described as a preparation method dates as early as 1787. The preparation of goulash did not undergo any alterations in time, its ingredients and their combination being left unchanged.

 

Creasta Cocoșului Trail Race

Nichita Stănescu Poetry Reading Evening

Description:

An evening dedicated to Nichita Stănescu’s poetry, who fell in love with Maramureș and visited Desești village twice. For over 40 years, at the end of September, the village becomes a cradle of Romanian poetry, resounding with the verses of the great poet. On this occasion, many great Romanian poets, but also French, Czech, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Serbian, Slovakian, Austrian and Bessarabian writers found their support. This cultural event is organized by Uniunea Scriitorilor din România (the Romanian Writers’ Union), the branch in Maramureș, and Asociația Culturală „Nichita Stănescu” in Desești, in partnership with Desești Town Hall and Local Council.

 

Winter Charity Fair

Description:

During the Charity Winter Christmas Fair in Ocna Șugatag one can buy anything, from stuffed cabbage rolls to Christmas ornaments, cards and drawings made by children, Christmas globes and handcrafted objects made by artisans. All this can be purchased in exchange for a donation.

This event is held at the beginning of December by the Theoretical High School in Ocna Șugatag, in partnership with the Town Hall, in the food market, where dozens of generous people gather. The money collected is used to provide aid to those in need, but also to help Saint Nicholas to bring gifts to all the children in Ocna Șugatag commune.

 

“În orașul Viflaim” (“In the town of Bethlehem”) Christmas Carol Festival

”În orașul Viflaim” Christmas Carol Festival is an event dedicated to the winter holidays, and to the traditions and customs preserved for this special time of the year. The Festival is held on 6th December, when Christians celebrate Saint Nicholas by singing charming carols. On the same day is celebrated the patron saint of the church in Budești-Josani, built in 1643. The church is part of the UNESCO world heritage, and is a monumental building, of large, as compared to other churches erected in the same period. Inside can be found well-kept folk paintings, icons painted on wood and glass, and part of Pintea Viteazu (Pintea the Brave)’s mail shirt. 

 

Christmas Traditions and Customs

Description:

On New Year’s Eve, in all the villages of the area, the carolers are welcomed in the houses ready for the celebration to announce the Birth of the Lord. On December 25, in Budești there is a Christmas carol concert “Mândră-i sara de Crăciun”, and on December 27 “Jocul Satului”. Both events take place at the Cultural Center in the commune center.

Also in the same period (December 27-28), in Sighetul Marmatiei, near the ecotourism destination, it takes place the Festival of Winter Traditions  and Customs, a festival whose first edition  was held in 1969, and became a point of reference  for Maramures.
