Tânjaua Hotenarilor

Description:
An ancient agricultural tradition, documented since 1870, celebrating the first farmer to start plowing. He is escorted by villagers in festive attire, along with young men carrying 12 “tânjele” decorated with birch branches, ribbons, and towels. The procession moves towards Dărasca valley, where the celebrated farmer is splashed with water, with invocations for good harvests and a prosperous year. Before reaching the river, he attempts to escape and be the first to reach the water, but he is carefully guarded and brought back by the vigilant villagers. The event is complemented by a spectacle of folk music and dances, creating a festive atmosphere.

Workshop for making „răstăuțe” and Village Fair

Wandering Among Traditions

An established annual festival taking place in the courtyard of the “old” church in Breb, now in its fifth edition, where soloists and folk ensembles from Breb and other localities in Maramureș enchant the audience with traditional music and dances. Local craftsmen display their skilled work, while village socăcicele (women) tempt guests with local delicacies, including the famous Breb “brozbuțe” (stuffed cabbage rolls), doughnuts, pies, and other delights.

Nichita Stănescu Poetry Evening

On December 6, Christians celebrate Saint Nicholas. It is said that on this day the heavens open and Saint Nicholas can be seen alongside God. To honor Saint Nicholas, a carol concert is organized in Budești. In Maramureș, this is also an occasion to celebrate the feast day of the wooden church in Budești, built in 1643, dedicated to him, as are the churches in the localities of Bogdan Vodă, Glod, Ferești, Corneși, and Vișeul de Sus.

On Christmas Eve night, carolers are welcomed into brightly lit and festively decorated homes to announce the Birth of the Lord. On December 25, the “Mândră-i sara de Crăciun” carol concert takes place in Budești, and on December 27, the “Village Dance.” Both events are held at the Cultural Center in the commune center. During the same period (December 27-28), the Festival of Winter Customs and Traditions takes place in Sighetu Marmației, near the ecotourism destination, a festival that first took place in 1969 and has become a landmark for Maramureș.
