We’ll discover the last patches of virgin forests in the Țibleș Mountains hosting the giants of Maramureș – trees of 300 years of age and more, embracing steep slopes and massive rocks in old forests as one could have experienced 1000 years ago, with species of plants and animals long lost in other parts of Europe. These forests included in the UNESCO heritage, are one of the WWF’s conservation areas in Romania. The wildlife watching programmed at the Baiut observatories for the evenings will be the perfect moments to deepen your knowledge related to bears.

Day 4, 5 and 6Culture of wood in the Maramures countryside

These days will introduce you to the culture of wood which gave way to the well-known identity of Maramures – massive carved wooden gates, UNESCO heritage wooden churches, peasant hydraulic devices – come and witness the wisdom built in wood in the villages along the rivers of Mara and Cosău. We’ll have the privilege of directly experiencing a traditional lifestyle by visiting farmer families, “horinca” tasting at a local fruit distillery, and enjoying delicious homemade meals. With easy walks in the villages and plenty of opportunities for nature photography on flower filled hay meadows between them, we’ll explore the spectacular countryside and cultural landscape together.

Accommodation at a local guesthouse in Breb.

Day 7: Reflections of recollections of the past

We’ll travel along the border area with Ukraine, to Sapânța, to explore the uniqueness of the Merry Cemetery where grave markers celebrate life with beautiful images and gentle wit. This cheerful attitude in front of death was a pre-Christian Dacian custom, where there was a belief in life after death, death being just a gate into another world.  Next, we’ll stop and investigate the communist period at the former political prison in Sighetu Marmației.  After discovering the historic center of the city and allowing free time to search for souvenirs, we’ll be heading back to Cluj-Napoca.

Accommodation at Grand Hotel in Cluj-Napoca.

Day 8: Cluj Napoca and departure

Explore Cluj Napoca city center and its architecture carrying the memories of the history and leave to the airport for travel back home.
