Description
A day of nature exploration – dedicated to the discovery of the virgin forests that are home to the last giants in Maramures – trees of over 500 years, embracing steep slopes and massive rocks, as it was 1000 years ago.
The old growth forests of Strâmbu Băiuț are unique in the Eastern Carpathians – these are the last forest ecosystems in which nature survives in its pure form, as a result of a long natural evolution, without being significantly affected by human intervention. The forests are included today in the UNESCO World Heritage.
Guided by the local forestry specialist, we will discover the mysteries of natural forests, which once covered the vast majority of the territories, and understand their role as a source of inspiration, resource and energy in the lives of the locals over time.
We meet the guide and start the hike at the mineral water spring from Valea Poienii, on the communal road DC56, from DJ109F to Poiana Botizii. You may leave your car here. The total length of our trekking is 8 km, of which the 5 km access road is of slight difficulty, the path from the virgin forest being of medium difficulty.
In the afternoon we will go to the village of Băiuț by car (14 km), then we will head to the observatory placed on the Tocila Valley (5 km), where we will be assisted by experienced wildlife watching guides during the evening.
Program starts at 10:00 am and ends after nightfall.
