Climbing on the Rooster's Crest
The Rooster's Crest is the most spectacular cliff in the Gutâi Mountains: a blade of volcanic rock rising from the ridge, visible from dozens of kilometres away. Its 37 equipped and approved routes cover a range of difficulty grades, on solid rock with fixed protection. The view from the top, over the villages of the Maramureș Depression, is part of the reward.
The crest is a nature reserve, so the rules are stricter than on other crags: no new routes are opened, the rock is not altered, no fires are lit and there is no camping outside the permitted places. Access is along the marked path.
Paragliding
The shape of the ridge — gentle south-facing slopes and a cliff that generates rising air currents — makes the area popular with pilots. Flying depends entirely on the wind and visibility, so the decision is made on the day, on site.
Before you set out
Both activities should only be practised with your own equipment and proper experience, or accompanied by a certified instructor. Check the forecast, tell someone where you are going and set off early.
