The Mara – Cosău – Rooster's Crest area is best discovered on foot, by bike and in conversation with the locals. Below is everything you can do here, from day hikes to the village celebrations.
Outdoors
Hikes climb from the villages to the Rooster's Crest, lakes and peat bogs on marked trails. By bike you have six routes, from the Cosău Valley to the Igniș plateau. There is also climbing and paragliding, ski touring in winter, wildlife watching and photography and bathing in the salt lakes of Ocna Șugatag.
Culture and traditions
Visit the wooden churches, some of them UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the traditional craftsmen in their workshops. See the old water-powered installations — whirlpool washers, fulling mills, grain mills — and spend a day in the life of Maramureș people. For weddings, dances and fairs, follow the events calendar.
