The information centres are the first place worth stopping at when you arrive in the area. Here you can pick up printed maps and trail leaflets, and find out what events are on, which wooden churches can be visited that day and whom to call for the key, which craftspeople are at work and can receive visitors, and what the roads are like after rain or snow.

They are also the best source for information that changes: opening hours, prices, availability. A phone call in advance saves you a wasted trip.

Before you set out

The centres keep daytime hours, and outside the season they may be shorter. The simplest thing is to call or write in advance using the details above. If you are already staying somewhere, your host can often help with the same things — guesthouse owners know the area and know whom to ask.
