What ski touring means here
Ski touring needs neither a groomed slope nor a lift: you climb on skis fitted with climbing skins, along the same route you would walk in summer, and ski down through untracked snow. The Gutâi Mountains suit this kind of travel well — rounded ridges, wide clearings and moderate height differences, with no serious alpine exposure.
The usual touring areas are the Igniș plateau, the Gutâi ridge and the surroundings of the Rooster's Crest. You climb at your own pace, and the reward is a descent through untouched snow, with Maramureș spread out below you.
When, and with what
The season usually runs from the second half of December to March, depending on how generous the snow cover is. You need touring skis with dedicated bindings and climbing skins, layered clothing and avalanche safety gear — a transceiver, probe and shovel — as well as the skills to use it.
Staying safe in the mountains in winter
In winter the mountain changes: the path disappears under the snow, the waymarks can no longer be seen and the weather turns quickly. Check the forecast and the avalanche risk before you set out, tell someone which route you are taking and when you expect to be back, and don't go alone. Start early — daylight fades around 5 pm.
