🏛 Bârsana — UNESCO Church & Monastery

The wooden church of Bârsana is part of the group of eight Maramureș churches included in the UNESCO World Heritage list. Bârsana Monastery, built of wood in the traditional style, is one of the most beautiful in Romania, with an impressive bell tower and valuable interior paintings.

✝ Săpânța — The Merry Cemetery

Săpânța, Maramureș

The Merry Cemetery in Săpânța is a masterpiece of folk art, unique in the world. Colourful wooden crosses, carved and painted with scenes from the lives of the deceased and humorous or melancholic verses, turn the cemetery into a true open-air museum. Created by master craftsman Stan Ioan Pătraș and his successors, it has become one of the most visited attractions in Romania.

🚜 Vișeu de Sus — The Steam Train (Mocănița)

The Vaser Valley steam train is one of the last steam-powered forest railways in Europe. The little steam train crosses one of the wildest valleys in the Carpathians, offering unforgettable views through virgin forests and steep cliffs.

🏭 Sighetu Marmației — Memorial of the Victims of Communism

Sighetu Marmației, Maramureș

Set up in the former prison where Romanian political leaders, intellectuals and clergy were imprisoned and killed during the communist period. The memorial is a place of commemoration and education about the crimes of the communist regime, recognised at European level.

🌊 Borșa — Horses' Waterfall

Borșa, Maramureș

The tallest waterfall in Romania (90 m), located in the Rodna Mountains National Park. It can be reached on foot (approx. 2 hours return) or by chairlift from the Borșa resort. The view is spectacular, especially in spring, when the snow melts.
