The Eco Maramureș destination encompasses the villages of Budești, Călinești, Desești, Giulești, Ocna Șugatag and the town of Baia Sprie. Please follow the guidelines below to help preserve the natural and cultural heritage of the area.
- Appropriate clothing is required when visiting holy places; brief or revealing clothing is not permitted.
- Keep order, cleanliness and quiet; set mobile phones to silent mode.
- Inside the wooden churches, photographs must be taken without flash to protect the interior frescoes.
- Use only marked trails.
- Camping is permitted only in designated areas.
- Do not damage trail markings or road signs.
- Use designated fireplaces or cook on a portable stove.
- Take all your waste with you — leave no trace.
- Maintain decent behaviour and respect for other visitors.
- Keep quiet and keep dogs on a lead to avoid disturbing wildlife.
- Slow down and give an audible warning when approaching hikers.
- Use front and rear lights after nightfall.

In protected natural areas
A large part of the destination is a protected area or a Natura 2000 site. Here the rules are not a formality: stay on the marked trails, don't pick plants or collect rocks or fossils, don't light fires outside designated places and only camp where it is allowed. Peat bogs and marshes are the most fragile — a single step off the path leaves a mark that stays visible for years.
In villages and households
The villages here are lived in; they are not open-air museums. Ask permission before entering a yard or photographing people — especially older people and children. The carved gates, barns and traditional installations are private property: admire them from the road, and visit only with the owner's consent. If you are shown around a household, a kind word and buying something on the spot mean more than anything else.
With pets and on the road
Keep your dog on a lead: there are sheepfolds with shepherd dogs and wild animals in the area, and a dog running loose causes problems for everyone. Don't feed wild animals. Horse-drawn carts and livestock use the village roads — drive slowly and give them right of way.
What you leave behind
Take everything you brought with you, including biodegradable scraps — an orange peel takes months to decompose and draws animals towards the trail. Buy from local producers and craftspeople: it is the most direct way for your visit to benefit the community.
