There are family doctors' practices in the commune centres, and the nearest hospitals are in Baia Mare and Sighetu Marmației, both less than an hour's drive from most villages in the destination.
Money, payments and shopping
In Ocna Șugatag and Baia Sprie card payments are common and ATMs are easy to find. In the small villages, however — at the village shop, with craftspeople or local producers — cash is still the safest option, so it is worth carrying small notes. There are grocery shops in every commune centre; in smaller villages opening hours are shorter and shops often close early on Sundays.
Phone signal, internet and fuel
Mobile signal is good in the villages and along the main roads, but it weakens or disappears in deep valleys and on ridge trails — download maps and GPX files before you set out. Most guesthouses offer wi-fi. Fill up with fuel in Ocna Șugatag, Desești or Baia Sprie: there are no petrol stations between the villages.
