About the village
Chiuzbaia is a mountain village near the towns of Baia Sprie and Baia Mare, below Igniș Peak. It is best known for the Chiuzbaia fossil reserve: 50 hectares of forest north of the village where the rock layers preserve, like a herbarium, the leaves of a forest several million years old — about 240 species of fossil plants, a reference point for this part of Europe. The reserve is explored like an ordinary forest hike, at around 800 m.
The village still has working whirlpool washers (vâltori) — traditional water-powered installations. The water that once drove the extraction machinery of the Baia Sprie mines was also brought from Chiuzbaia, along the Western Canal.
