What to look for when you choose
For a cycling holiday, a few things make the difference between the right host and just any host:
- A lockable space for bikes — a shed or a garage that locks, not the yard.
- Somewhere to wash your bike — a hose and a brush are worth a lot after a day on forest roads.
- Repair tools and a pump, for the small problems that come up on every ride.
- A place to dry your clothes — after rain, it matters to set off the next day in dry kit.
- A hearty meal, served at times that suit a cyclist's day, and a packed lunch for the road.
- Hosts who know the trails — the best advice on the state of a road comes from someone who rode it last week.
Many guesthouses in the destination also have bikes for rent, so you can come without bringing your own.
Choosing your base
If you want to ride for several days without changing accommodation, pick a central village — from Ocna Șugatag, Breb or Budești you can reach most trails without a car transfer. Book early in the warm season and at weekends; the guesthouses here are small, with only a few rooms.
