Baia Sprie was one of the most important mining centres in Romania, known for gold, silver and base-metal mining, and also one of the largest and richest areas for finding beautiful minerals, the so-called "mine flowers". Mine flowers are spectacular, rare mineral formations that grow inside mines under particular conditions. They appear as delicate, enchanting crystals with fascinating colours and shapes, iridescent hues and varying degrees of translucency and hardness. Of the more than 70 minerals identified in the Baia Sprie deposit, seven were discovered and described here for the first time: andorite, dietrichite, felsőbányaite, klebelsbergite, monsmedite, semseyite and szmikite. Other mineral varieties and synonyms were also first described here: eggonite (a mineral now called sterrettite), kenngottite (a lead-bearing variety of miargyrite) and zinc-fauserite (a zinc-bearing variety of fauserite). The superb mine flowers from the Baia Sprie and Herja mines can be admired at the Mineralogy Museum in Baia Mare, or in private collections.
Where you can see them
Mine flowers can no longer be collected — mining has ended and the galleries are not open to the public without a guide. They can, however, be admired in the county's museum collections, where specimens from the Baia Sprie deposit are among the most prized pieces, and in the private collections of former miners, who have kept the crystals they brought to light over the years.
Their beauty is no accident: the crystals grow freely in cavities in the rock, where mineral-rich solutions had the space and time to deposit layer upon layer. That is why every specimen is unique, and its shape says something about the conditions in the exact spot where it formed.
The Mines Park
Since 2025, Dealul Minei has been part of the Mines Park (Parcul Minelor) — 80 hectares of forest designated as a forest park and laid out by Baia Sprie Town Hall as Romania's first mining theme park. The old mine workings, viewpoints and geological sites are linked by marked themed trails.
