About the village
Călinești stretches along the Cosău Valley, between Budești and Ocna Șugatag. The village has two old wooden churches, one in Josani and one in Susani, and as in Breb or Budești, its lanes are lined with tall carved gates.
Călinești is known for crafts linked to wool and traditional dress: woollen cloth (pănură) and towels are still woven on the loom here, along with “gube” (thick woollen coats), Maramureș shirts, belts and beadwork, and some craftsmen also work in wood.
What to do from here
The Cosău Trail runs through Călinești along the river, with stops at the wooden churches and at the old water-powered installations in Sârbi — fulling mills, whirlpool washers, a grain mill and a threshing machine. The village has its own tourist information centre, where you can get the map and the destination guide.
