About the village
Sat Șugatag is the old village next to the Ocna Șugatag resort; it appears in documents around 1360, together with Breb and Hoteni. It has a wooden church, Saint Paraskeva, from 1699, and some of the traditional water-powered installations still preserved in the area: whirlpool washers, a mill and a plum-brandy still.
In summer, on three Sundays in August, Sat Șugatag, Breb and Hoteni hold the barn dance (jocul la șură), with local fiddlers and the whole village dancing.
What to do from here
The Igniș – Mara Trail (25–33 km) starts in Sat Șugatag and passes the Iezerul Mare peat bog, the Tătarului Gorges and the Runcu Dam, and the Rails Trail also runs through the village.
