Heading up towards the springs of the Mara River, to the north-west, you reach the Tătarului Gorges — a gorge cut through volcanic rock, described by geologists as “the only gorge cut into pyroxene andesite in Romania”.
The Tătarului Gorges are a protected natural area, part of the European Natura 2000 site Igniș. The wild scenery and the geological features make them one of the most remarkable natural attractions of the Eco Maramureș destination.

Getting there and what to expect
The gorges lie upstream in the Mara Valley, towards the river's springs. You can walk or cycle through them on the road that follows the water. No climbing gear is needed, but hiking footwear is recommended, as the ground is rocky and often wet.
The contrast between the two slopes is one of the defining features of the place. The western side rises almost vertically, like a true wall of rock, while on the eastern side blocks of stone mingle with the forest. Because the gorge is so narrow, sunlight reaches the bottom for only a few hours a day, which keeps it damp and cool even at the height of summer.
When to visit
Late spring and autumn are very good times to visit, when the flow of the water and the colours of the forest show the landscape at its best. After heavy rain the water may cover parts of the trail, so check the weather before you set out. In winter, frozen moisture can make the path slippery.
As this is a protected natural area, please stay on the trail, do not break off rocks and do not leave any waste behind.
