Iezerul Mare Peat Bog (Turbăria Iezerul Mare)

Nestled at 1,014 m in a crater on the plateau of the Igniș Mountains, the peat bog – also known as Tăul Hărniceștilor – is a wallowing place for deer and wild boar. The lake itself is not very large – about 200 m² – but the boggy area stretches over 20 ha, with a peat layer 7 metres thick.

Here, at Iezerul Mare Peat Bog, you will find the most representative bog flora in the whole of Maramureș: Siberian ligularia, cranberry, sundew, crowberry, cotton-grass, bog rosemary, purple moor-grass and sedges.
